Sabine a Sculptor in Spain

Oversized stone heads with mysterious faces grow from the earth; a menagerie of surreal creatures and forms finds shelter among succulents and under trees; a monumental dragon guards this enchanted garden.

Small-format objects, found on the parapet and terrace walls, as well as in the house, display a reduced formal language, some monochrome or colorful.

Using a specially developed layering process, a wide variety of mineral materials, as well as metal and fabric fibers, are processed. The artist pays particular attention to the homogeneity and haptics of the surface design. She strives to “grasp” her works.

The full-scale sculptures are multivisual; the silhouette changes depending on the viewing angle, and the dynamic impression characterizes the experience of the form. The concept of polymorphism is comprehensive, allowing many of the objects to be positioned in different ways.

In addition to exploring Constantin Brâncuși’s concept of abstractionism and Henry Moore’s style of three-dimensional realization of the sculptural idea, it is above all Hans Arp’s “tension de sol” thesis that has influenced Sabine McGowan’s formal language.

Her awareness of the principle of eternal transformation in the cycle of nature and its philosophical reflection have given rise to a unique visual language. A personal synthesis that, in its vitality and expressive power, not only exerts extraordinary fascination but also expands the boundaries of the viewer’s perception, thus opening up new dimensions.

Sabine McGowan has lived and worked as a freelance artist near Alicante, Spain, since 2015.

The artist’s oeuvre includes representational works rooted in Surrealism and Dadaism as well as abstract polymorphic forms.
